Joan Jonas with Jason Moran is a lecture performance with live piano and video projections, as well as improvisational actions. This performance is organised in collaboration with the Faculty of Fine Arts at Concordia University. Throughout the evening, Jonas and Moran will interact with each other as they demonstrate examples from their ten years of collaboration, starting with the performance The Shape, The Scent, the Feel of Things from 2005 up to the most recent performance They Come to Us without a Word, commissioned for the U.S. pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2015 and currently on view at DHC/ART.

A series of performances, screenings, and conversations
In conjunction with the exhibition, DHC/ART and guest curator Barbara Clausen will present Affinities: a series of performances, screenings, and conversations, a program of events in two parts, from May 24 to 27 and from June 20 to August 26. This series will present a performance lecture by Joan Jonas with Jason Moran, performances by taisha paggett, Tanya Lukin Linklater and Simone Forti, two evenings of film and video screenings, and one afternoon of conversation. While distinct in their own practice and aesthetics, the participating artists from the fields of dance, visual arts and music, share an affinity with Jonas’s engagement and ‘insistence’ on reading the world(s) against and with the flow of the times. These interdisciplinary art practices, from the fields of art, dance, poetry, and music, in a similar vanguard spirit to that of Jonas, explore modes of movement, sound and non-linear storytelling. This is reflective of a constantly evolving collective imaginary that reflects and shapes the various socio-political contexts we live in.
Joan Jonas (b. 1936, New York, USA) is a world-renowned artist whose work encompasses a wide range of media including video, performance, installation, sound, text, and sculpture. Jonas experiments and productions in the late 1960s and early 1970s continue to be crucial to the development of many contemporary art genres, from performance and video to conceptual art and theatre. Since 1968, her practice has explored ways of seeing, the rhythms of rituals, and the authority of objects and gestures. Jonas has exhibited, screened and performed her work at museums, galleries and large scale group exhibitions throughout the world, such as: Taipei Biennal; Documenta 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, and 13; the 2008 Sydney Biennial; the 2008 Yokohama Triennial; and the 28th Sao Paolo Biennial. She has recently presented solo exhibitions at Jeu de Paume, Paris; Museum of Modern Art, New York; CCA Kitakyushu, Japan; Contemporary Art Museum, Houston; HangarBicocca, Milan; NTU Centre for Contemporary Art, Singapore; and the United States Pavilion for the 56th Edition of the Venice Biennial.
Jason Moran is a jazz pianist, composer, and critically acclaimed jazz musician. He was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2010 and is currently the artistic director of the Jazz section at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington D.C.). Moran’s work includes a series of projects and collaborations with musicians as well as visual artists including: Theaster Gates, Adrian Piper, Glenn Ligon, Stan Douglas, Adam Pendleton, Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker. He has collaborated regularly with Joan Jonas since 2005. His work with his trio The Bandwagon (with drummer Nasheet Waits and bassist Tarus Mateen) has resulted in a profound discography for Blue Note Records. Moran was one of the artist’s featured in All the World’s Futures at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015 in Italy curated by Okwui Enwezor.
