Nuit blanche 2019
A Glow-in-the-Dark Dance of Symbols
In conjunction with the Jasmina Cibic exhibition and as part of the Nuit blanche, DHC/ART Education invites the general public to take part in A Glow-in-the-Dark Dance of Symbols, a special version of A Dance of Symbols, a painting workshop designed by artist duo Leisure. Participants will choose an abstract form and then transform it through tactile interventions such as gradients, stencils, stamps and stripes. The workshop will end with a dance of symbols in our Education room transformed for the occasion in a black light space.
The workshop A Dance of Symbols playfully explores expressions of self-identity and group collaboration through Expo 67-era aesthetics of design and choreography. The spirit of the workshop is an echo to Jasmina Cibic: Everything That You Desire and Nothing That You Fear, which explores how national identity is constructed during World Exhibitions. During Nuit blanche, the exhibition will be open from 7 PM to midnight.
The workshop will be facilitated by DHC/ART Education and by Leisure in a drop-in basis from 7 PM to midnight.
Leisure is a conceptual, collaborative art practice between Meredith Carruthers and Susannah Wesley, both based in Montréal. Working together under the name “Leisure” since 2004, they engage with cultural and historical narratives through research, conversation, published texts, curatorial projects, and art production. Leisure has produced exhibitions and special projects in Canada and abroad, and participated in residencies at The Rooms (St. John’s, Newfoundland, 2016), KIAC (Dawson City, Yukon, 2010), Kunstverein das weisse haus (Vienna, Austria, 2008), and Banff Centre for the Arts (Banff, Alberta, 2007). Their recent research on collaboration, gesture, and spatial narrative includes How One Becomes What One Is (Musée d’art de Joliette, 2018), Conversation with Magic Forms (VU Photo, 2017), Panning for Gold/Walking You Through It (Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, 2017), Conversations with Magic Stones as part of The Let Down Reflex (EFA, New York, 2016), and Dualité/Dualité (Artexte, Montreal, 2015). http://leisureprojects.tumblr.com
MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE
MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE is one of the largest winter festivals in the world, an annual celebration of 1,300,000 festival site visits from fans experiencing the joy of Montreal wintertime through a unique program combining performing arts, gastronomy, free outdoor family activities, and a full night of exquisitely original discoveries.
Nuit blanche à Montréal
Since the first Nuit blanche in Paris in 2002, the concept has spread to the four corners of the world. The idea is an inspired one: to give art and culture the chance to stay up all night, triggering discovery, astonishment, inquiry and enchantment. Montreal is proud to take part in this event for the 16th year in a row.
